Description

Cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) in an umbrella term for a potentially fatal immune response associated with a variety of conditions and triggers. It is known by many names, including macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) when associated with rheumatic diseases, or familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) as a genetic condition that most often affect infants.

Many common forms of CSS are often triggered by infections, particularly viruses, of which COVID-19 appears to be included.

In this webinar, Dr. Randy Cron will discuss criteria for identifying CSS in patients, complications, and available treatments which include glucocorticoids, but also targeted therapies that dampen pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-6.
